Teaching and Education
West China school of Stomatology，Sichuan University, formerly known as the Dental School of West China Union University, was founded in 1917, which was the origin of modern dental education in China. Till 1949, the college had set up eight faculties: Oral Anatomy and Physiology, Oral Pathology, Orthodontics, Oral Surgery, Periodontology, Endodontics, Prosthodontics and Paediatric Dentistry to train students. On October 6th, 1953, West China Union University changed its name to Sichuan Medical College, and the college was renamed to be the faculty of Stomatology. In 1985, Sichuan Medical College was granted the name of West China University of Medical Science by government, and our faculty became the College of Stomatology, West China University of Medical Sciences. The college was made up of five sub-faculties then, including Oral Basic Science, Oral Conservative Dentistry, Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Prosthodontics, and Orthodontics. On September 29th, 2000, West China University of Medical Science officially merged with Sichuan University, since then our college has been given the name as West China school of Stomatology of Sichuan University.
The school is consisted of five departments of, Preclinical Medicine of Stomatology, Oral Conservative Dentistry, Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Prosthodontics, and Orthodontics and twenty-three education and research sections of Oral Biology, Oral Anatomy and Physiology, Oral Histological Pathology, Oral Biomaterials, Oral Biomechanics, Caries, Endodontics, Periodontology, Oral Medicine, Oral Preventive Medicine, Paediatric Dentistry, Geriatric Dentistry, Clefts of palate and Lip, Traumatic Orthopedic Surgery, Head and Neck Cancer Surgery, Orthognathic Surgery, Dental Anaesthesia, Oral Radiology, Alveolar Surgery, Prosthodontics, Dental Implantology, Prosthodontics Technology, Orthodontics as well as a Fundamental and Experimental Education Center of Stomatology.
West China school of Stomatology has built a remarkable cadre of faculty in providing students with the full range of clinical and basic science training as well as in making them the talent men and women of fresh and innovative perspective on how to treat and care for patients. We have four-hundred and forty-one faculty members, a hundred and twenty-four professors, associate professors, among them thirty-four Ph.D mentors and fifty-three master mentors, an innovative team of the Ministry of Education, China as well as a state-level education team to work in our school.
The school provides various and multi-level dental education programs, including five-year, seven-year, eight-year and graduate education programs. High-level and long-academic teaching manners have become the major part of its dental education. More than 4000 qualified dentists, including approximately a hundred Taiwanese and foreign students, graduated from our school and were awarded master or doctoral degrees.
